Report by Jack Smith

The final stop of this year’s tour took place at the ever popular Bromborough Bowl, but due to over a dozen withdrawals in the last week we were left with a field of 36 to contest this stop, this did not stop some really exciting competition though.

Only 12 bowlers in the first squad took to the lanes on the Stonehenge pattern laid down by the new Kegel Flex machine now in operation at Bromborough. This proved tricky to master early on for the bowlers, but still produced some good scoring and leading this would be local bowler Nev Robinson with 1361 inc bonus and bowling 727 scr for last 3 games, a long way ahead of long traveler John Strettle on 1221,  Bromborough co-owner Trevor Green 1215, Ian McDonald also 1215, these bowlers would now have to wait and see if they would stay in the top 13 for the next round and Nev to see if he could hold on to top spot which mean't a place in the semi final.

The second squad started and first to make an impression were Mo Singleton 270 with bonus and Alan Keddie 253, “funtime” Frank Lindsay 235,262. But Mo and Alan would be overtaken by steady bowling from Mr Senior Ron Oldfield 1403 with bonus and top spot and straight through to semi-final, Ken Burton 1341, Funtime 1335, Chris Skudder 1313, Suren Johanssen aided by 258 last game 1308. The cut for the top 13 fell at 1211 Les Grant whose 237,225 finish just edging out Denise Dyke by a single pin.

Consolation for Denise was winning the top Lady prize. Round 2 and those placed 2 to 13 would contest a 2 game matchplay against an opponent decided by a random lane draw, this would lead to some heavyweight battles, mainly Mo and Funtime slugging it out first game to Mo 288 to 259, Frank then coming back with 232 to Mo’s 182 and a win for Frank 491 to 470, another big shootout ended in a win for Trevor Green over Alan Keddie 465 to 436, the other 4 matches all ended in comfortable wins for Les Grant 404 to 361 from Steve Laycock, Chris Skudder 432 -392 over Nev Robinson, Ken Burton 427-343 over Suren Johannsen and John Strettle 411-386 over Ian Mcdonald.

The six winners would once again bowl 2 games matchplay, opponents by random lane draw. All 3 games were very close after the first game with less than 10 pins difference in all 3 matches, however first to break free would be Chris with a high game of the day 278 to comfortably beat Trevor 468 to 345, also finding a good 2nd game would be Frank to just edge out Les 419-408, the last match would be a low scoring affair with Ken beating John 374-334.

On to the semi-final and leading qualifier Ron Oldfield would enter the fray, would the time out prove costly?. No it wouldn’t as a solid 232 first game would see him ease past Chris 446-398, for the third match in a row Frank would come from behind to defeat Ken 479-419 with the aid of a 257 second game. So the final and 2 questions,  would Ron win and break the sequence of different winners this year or could Frank maintain that sequence, the answer was an emphatic victory for Ron 500-351 and therefore making him the only 2 time winner this year.

The top 24 in the rankings list that have played at least 4 stops will now compete for over £1800 prize money at Mansfield Superbowl on 23rd October.

As ever my grateful thanks to Trevor and all his staff for the excellent way were treated and also a personal thank you to the bowlers for the patient way they dealt with a major breakdown on one of the lanes and the no fuss response to the way we dealt with the problem. It is really appreciated and meant that the timings were pretty much kept to. As there are no more stops this year I would like to thank the 91 bowlers who attended at least one stop and made this the most successful tour yet. I do hope that they all enjoyed the experience and maybe will try again next year.

As of this moment I am in the process of finalizing next year’s tour and will publish a further statement after the conclusion of the Masters in October. As always should anyone require any information regarding the tour please feel free to contact me on 07905 163353 or email at jgs833@outlook.com. Again many thanks to all those bowlers that participated this year, I have enjoyed every minute of every stop.
