Report by Jack Smith

The 6th stop on the Resdev Senior Tour took place at Barnsley Bowl on 14th August and from the start it felt like it would be something special, and so it proved to be in many ways, starting with the fact that there would be an entry of 55 bowlers, a wonderful turnout and a record for the Resedev Tour although this stop being shared with the BTBA senior tour probably helped to swell the numbers but that aside it was still great to see such numbers.

As ever with Barnsley bowl the scoring would be high and the food excellent and the staff always ready to help when needed. The first squad of 24 bowlers took to the lanes for the usual 6 game first round, this time looking for a place in the top 20 for round 2. Leading from the front the Chesterfield stop winner Gary Barlow posting a big score of 1445 inc bonus, close behind another Yorkshire senior Les Grant with a timely return to form on 1405, these two some way ahead of Norwich pro shop man Phil Punter 1341 closely followed by Scotland’s Alan Keddie 1330 and new to the tour Denise Dyke 1325. Rounding out the top 6 would be Al Jenkins 1305, surprise of this round would be Ron Oldfield struggling to carry the corner pins and posting a lowly 1245 which judging by the scoring would prove to not be enough for the top 20.

So the second squad took to the lanes knowing that scoring was going to be high, amongst them Senior England star Lol Ellis who 2 years ago had played here and posted a perfect game, could he do it again, well yes he could after bowling 246 in the first game he then threw 12 strikes on lanes 15 and 16 for another 300 then following that with 258 for an 804 he would ease off to only 723 for his last 3 but a massive 1587 with bonus, could anyone come close?. Well England lady star bowler Angie Brown gave it a good go at it bowling 1516 with bonus including games of 256,277,278. Other notable scores another England bowler Keith Hodge 1431 and another welcome return to form for Birmingham bowler Steve Bose 1407 this with zero bonus. Rounding out the top 6 in this squad 2 Lincolnshire bowlers Scunthorpe runner up Brian Greenbeck 1369 ND Mark Fullbrook 1332 again with zero bonus. The cut for the top 20 fell at 1273 with bonus this would be Lancashire bowler Paul Newton with a 232 last game just edging out Norwich bowler Jeff Platten by a solitary pin.

The 20 bowlers from round 1 now would play a further 3 games scores carried forward to decide the top 12, with the top 3 after 9 games going straight through to the final, the remaining 9 would play another 3 games in round 3 with the top 3 going into the final with the top 3 after round 2. The bonus for the top 12 was that they would all receive prize money. Making a bid for the top 12 Al Jenkins with a 258 first game and 680 total with bonus, eclipsing that would be Shipley stop winner Mike (Frosty)Halliwell with a 290 second game and 720 total moving him to 7th place overall. The top 3 were Lol, Angie both maintaining their high scoring from round 1, moving into 3rd with a final game of 257 would be Gary Barlow edging out Keith Hodge into 4th.

These 3 could now rest up for the final. The cut for 12th fell at 1967 Brian Sempers just getting ahead of Denise whose 155 last game proved costly. Bowlers placed 9 to 12 would now face another 3 games with the top 3 advancing to the final. With scores carrying forward from previous round Keith Hodge had a healthy lead and would ease comfortably into the final, however the fight for a top 3 place would be an amazing result, coming from last to take 2nd place would be Scunthorpe bowler Brian Sempers with 732 the third place would be separated by 1 pin with Les Grant just holding off Mike Halliwell with Brian Greenbeck only 1 pin behind Mike, with all 3 bowlers striking with their first ball in the final frame but none managing a 2nd, what an exciting finish, the 6 bowlers missing out on the final were Mike, Brian G, Al Jenkins, Mark Fullbrook, Steve Bose and Alan Keddie.

The final would be 3 more games this time starting from zero, which meant it was anyone of the 6 who could triumph. Starting strongly Gary Barlow with 245 would take a lead from Angie and Lol both with 222 scratch. But Gary’s worst game of the day of 157 followed and would put him out of contention, Angie with a solid 227 to Lol’s 217 took a healthy 30 pin lead into the last game, could Lol pull that back?. It would prove not to be despite a great finish of 6 strikes for a 235 game, Angie with a solid 213 would triumph by just 18 pins. Keith with 3 good games would take 3rd, Les with a 222 last game would hold off Gary and Brian having a 143 2nd game but firing back with 227 last game would narrowly finish 6th.

So a first for the Resdev tour a lady winner Angie Brown taking home the £400 first prize and yet again another different winner this year, 6 stops 6 different winners and with only one stop left will anyone of the 6 be able to double up?. The 7th and final stop will take place at Bromborough bowl on 18th September, already with 46 entries it should prove just as exciting as they now have the new Flex lane machine, there are only 6 spaces left in the 9.30 squad, so anyone wishing to enter please contact me on either jgs833@outlook.com or 07905 163353.  Once again my thanks to Dave, Helen and all the staff at Barnsley Bowl who treated to a feast of bowling and the food is always superb.
